APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When using WebSphere Application Server with Rational
Application Developer, an unsupported call to stop the
Application Server JVM through System.exit could leave
Rational Application Developer reporting an incorrect or
indeterminate state for WebSphere Application Server.

Local fix

  • Discontinue use of System.exit to stop WSAS JVM.

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
Rational Application Developer provides tools to monitor the
state of WebSphere Application Servers, including their
started or stopped status. That reporting can be misdirected
when a server is stopped by code calling System.exit() outside
Application Server control. This is not generally a supported
application behavior, but it does occur in practice in
application scenarios and should be handled reliably.

Problem conclusion

  • A new message, code WSVR0023I, is emitted when the server's
stop process is initiated. Note that, while this message is
logged when the server is stopped using a supported stop
method or a System.exit() call, it will not be logged if the
process is directly terminated, such as with a "kill" command.
A separate Rational Application Developer APAR addresses the
Rational Application Developer behavior associated with this
    issue.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix packs 8.0.0.9 and 8.5.5.3. Please refer to the Recommended
