PH73337: ON Z/OS 3.2, COBOL COMPUTE STATEMENT PRODUCES AN INCORRECT SIGN 26/09/27 PTF PECHANGE

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• COBOL programs compiled with the ARITH(EXTEND) compiler option
  that contain COMPUTE statements may produce a value with an
  incorrect sign.
  For example, the following COMPUTE can result in 904.88
  (incorrect positive) instead of -904.88 (correct negative).
  
  COMPUTE RES = A * .01 * (B / 12) * C * D
  (where RES is PICTURE S9(15)V99 COMP-3)
  
  This APAR PE's the following COBOL Runtime PTFs:
       z/OS V3.2: UO08823 (COBOL Runtime August 2026)
       z/OS V3.2: UO08255 (COBOL Runtime June 2026)
       z/OS V3.2: UO07530 (COBOL Runtime April 2026)
  
  Note that the z/OS V2.5 and 3.1 are not affected.

  APAR PH70734 (Continuation of PH68222 for long multiplication
  performance improvement), introduced in the April 2026 COBOL
  Runtime PTF for z/OS 3.2 (PTF UO07530 for HLE77F0 3.2),
  causes calculation values with an incorrect sign.
  
  This problem occurs only if all of the following conditions
  are met:
  
  - The programs are AMODE 31 COBOL version 5 or 6.
  - The programs are run on z/OS 3.2 with any of
  the PTFs in error applied.
  - 'Call IGZXXMU0' or 'Call IGZXXMU2' appears in the COBOL
  listing generated with the COBOL LIST option. For example,
  ...

  Note:
  1. Call to IGZXXMU0 or IGZXXMU2 are typically generated
  by long multiplications using explicit or implied COMPUTE
  or MULTIPLY statements.
  
  2, Running the same program on z/OS 2.5 or z/OS 3.1 is
  not affected by the problem.

Problem conclusion
