APAR status

  • Closed as new function.

Error description

  • With NOOTELTRACE set in a region that is the target of a
    function shipping request from a region with OTEL enabled, the
    target region still receives OTEL context data.

    This involves the following process:

    1. A HTTP request with OTEL data is received by a program in
       region A which has OTELPROP set.

    2. Via an IPIC or MRO connection, a function shipping request is
       made to region B which has NOOTELTRACE set.

    3. Region B incorrectly receives OTEL context from Region A.

    4. A DFHMNOTX EXTRACT_OTEL call in Region B then returns the
       OTEL trace parent information which should not have been
       propagated to Region B from Region A.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: OTEL data received in CICS region with *
    *                      NOOTELTRACE set after a function        *
    *                      shipping request.                       *
    ****************************************************************
    A function shipping request is made from a program in a CICS
    region which contains OTEL context data and has OTELPROP set.
    This request is made to a separate CICS region which has OTEL
    disabled (NOOTELTRACE).

    This CICS region still receives OTEL context data, such as the
    trace ID, parent ID, and span ID. Since OTEL is disabled in this
    region, no OTEL context data should have been received by this
    region.

Problem conclusion

  • CICS has been updated to ensure OTEL context data is not
    received when NOOTELTRACE is set during a function shipping
    request between CICS regions.
