APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • SMF timer pops before the QMGR has been through the initial
checkpoint following QMGR restart. Looping can occur . Some
conditions can prevent initial checkpoint from occurring. In
this case it was DB2 being unavailable or down. The log showed
    CSQ5003A message.

Local fix

  • Setting STATIME=0, ACCTIME=0 in the ZPRM should prevent this
    problem.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: High CPU during queue manager startup *
    * when SMF Statistics or Accounting is *
    *                      enabled.                                *
    ****************************************************************
During queue manager initialisation the SMF timer task
establishes a STIMER for the periodic generation of SMF records.
If queue manager startup is delayed prior to the startup
checkpoint (for example, while waiting for DB2 to become
available in a Queue Sharing Group), and the initial STIMER
interval expires, or SET SYSTEM changes the accounting or
statistics interval, the SMF timer task incorrectly
reestablishes the STIMER with a very short interval. This leads
to the SMF timer task waking up almost immediately and
repeatedly reestablishing the short STIMER, until the start up
    checkpoint has occurred.

Problem conclusion

  • The SMF timer task correctly calculates the intended STIMER
interval when waking prior to the startup checkpoint.
