APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • The OTel Java agent is configured in a Liberty JVM server.
However when an application running in the Liberty JVM server
puts a message onto an MQ queue using producer.send() no spans
are created for the JMS publish or MQ PUT.

Local fix

  • This problem can be circumvented by not using a Shared Class
Cache (SCC) with the Liberty JVM server. This can be achieved
by removing -Xshareclasses from the JVM profile.

    ****************************************************************
A Liberty JVM server is configured with the OTel Java Agent and
a Java Shared Class Cache (SCC) using bytecode instrumentation
    (using -Xshareclasses:enableBCI or -XX:ShareClassesEnableBCI).

Upon restart of the JVM server OTel spans may no longer be
created because classes are loaded from the SCC and not
    re-instrumented by the OTel agent.

Problem conclusion

  • CICS has been updated so that if a Java Agent is being used in a
Liberty JVM server with a shared class cache then CICS will set
the -XX:ShareClassesDisableBCI option to disable BCI if BCI has
    not been explicitly enabled.

Note the disabling of BCI can cause an assertion failure so the
fix for Java APAR IJ57690 must be applied if a Java Agent is
being used with a Shared Class Cache.
