PH66324: IBM RSEAPI 1.2.1 STARTED TASK TERMINATES WHEN LOGGING IS ENABLED FOR A USER AND THE USER LOG RUNS OUT OF SPACE

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• In IBM z/OS Explorer RSEAPI 1.2.1, when user logging is enabled
  and a user runs out of space, the started task is terminated.
  
  The started task job output at the termination of the task
  returns a code of 3840.
  
  The user's ffs.log will show the message below on the last line.
  
  
  Logging should start when the session begins, but due to space
  constrictions or other reasons, the logging ceases with
  "Error occurs when directory /u/u123456/.rseapi/6800.1/U123456/
  is opened".
  

Local fix

• Create more space in the user directory and restart the RSEAPI
  started task.

  1.When detect logging issue in accessing the user log location,
    server logger should not call program exit causing server
    termination as logging issue is not a terminal
  2.RSEAPI START &STOP commands must be issued against different
    task names (S RSEAPI versus P RSEAPI1)
  3.A Password/passphrase expiration policy of 255 days is
    interpreted literally, not as non-expiring password
  4.RSEAPI now ships a sample
    rseapi/tomcat.base/samples/mvsMappings.json configuration file
    that can be copied to $RSEAPI_CFG to tell RSEAPI how to map
    data set members
  5.RSEAPI rejects users with a Zowe ML bearer token in the
    validation on last login using user and password timer
  

Problem conclusion

• 1.Remove the explicit exit call on error when accessing the
    user log directory, and return an error in such condition.
    In addition, introducing the user logging pause ability to
    temporarily skip writing non-critical messages and rotating
    current logs due to anticipated lack of space. Set
    RSE_LOGGER_PAUSE_ENABLE=true in the rseapi.env to enable this
    functionality, it is default to false if not set.
  2.STC JCL HUHSTC/RSEAPI to have console listener in the primary
    address space
  3.RSEAPI to set flag when a never-expires pass is detected
  4.Instead of copy/paste sample from documentation or RSEAPI
    trying to generate $RSEAPI_CFG/mvsMappings.json, the file is
    now created when running SHUHSAMP(HUSETUP)
  5.Ensure the user with a Zowe ML bearer token is authenticated
    based on the token only
