Error description

  • When the target output directory for Open XL C/C++ for z/OS is
    an NFS file system the compiler encounters the following error
    due to NFS not supporting z/OS file code page tagging:

    $ ibm-clang -c test.c
    error: unable to open output file 'test.o': 'EDC5134I Function
    not implemented.' (for binary object output)
    OR
    error: error opening 'test.d': EDC5134I Function not
    implemented. (for text -M -MF test.d output)

Local fix

  • Target output to a zFS file system.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM Open XL C/C++ users targeting output *
    * directory being the NFS file system. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Currently NFS file system does not *
    * support file tagging which compiler *
    * use for any output file it creates. *
    * As a result user gets either "error: *
    * unable to open output file 'test.o': *
    *                      'EDC5134I Function not implemented.'"   *
    *                      or "error: error opening 'test.d':      *
    *                      EDC5134I Function not implemented."     *
    * depending on whether creating an *
    * object file or a dependency file *
    *                      respectively.                           *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the PTF *
    ****************************************************************
    Compiler fails to create object or dependency file when tagging
    is not supported.

Problem conclusion

  • As a workaround, until NFS have the required support, compiler
    will create untagged files and ignore errors received from
    `fcntl()` C function. This fix will create a drawback of
    redirecting preprocessed output to end up with untagged file
    with ASCII content and it will require to use iconv to convert
    to IBM-1047 as follows: `iconv -f 819 -t 1047 <r.i >r.ebcdic.i`.
