Error description

  • Installation of the Accelerator on IBM Z fails if an Extent
Space Efficient (ESE) boot volume in a copy-relationship (such
    as metro-mirror, flash-copy, or safeguarded-copy) is used.

The corresponding scenario is as follows:
Customer is running the Accelerator on IBM Z on a z15 with MCL
    driver DC41_0022.
The upgrade of the Accelerator (to 7.5.12.2) fails during upload
of the new image to the target disk.
While message "Formatting the disk and uploading image file to
serve. This may take several minutes" is shown in the Admin UI
on panel "Welcome root!", a pop-up window with the following
    error message suddenly occurs:
"Installing appliance failed. The server has encountered an
unexpected error. Please try again later".
Subsequent attempts to upload the new image to the target disk
    lead to the same issue.

IBM support (FW specialist) looking into the IQYY-log typically
will identify that the formatting of the boot device has failed
    (a message similar to
    "/api/com.ibm.zaci.system/sw-appliances/install: Failed to
    format 0.0.1e01" can be seen).
Further analysis identifies that the installation failed because
the boot volume used is an ESE volume in a copy-relationship
    (such as in metro-mirror, flash-copy, or safeguarded-copy).

    Please note:
    - The issue described affects both z15 and z16 hardware. The
issue even occurs on a z15 if MCL driver D41C_0023 is in
      place.
    - An MCL fix will be required to overcome the issue.
    - If during an Accelerator upgrade you are affected by the
symptoms described above, let your Storage Administrator
verify whether the boot volume used is an ESE (thin
provisioned) volume. Subsequently, open a support case
describing the scenario and referring to this APAR.

Local fix

  • Please use a fully provisioned boot volume until an MCL bundle
with the required fix has been made available.

Problem summary

  • Problem Summary:
Installation of the Accelerator on IBM Z fails if
    - an Extent Space Efficient (ESE) boot volume in a
    copy-relationship is used
    and
    - if for a z15, the MCL bundle installed is S71 or later but
lower than S91 or if for a z16, the MCL bundle installed is
    lower than S40.

    Customers affected:
Customers using an Extent Space Efficient (ESE) boot volume in a
copy-relationship is used if the MCL bundle installed is S71 or
later but lower than S91 (for a z15) or if the MCL bundle
installed is lower than S40 (for a z16).

    Problem Scenario:
    See APAR Error description above.

Problem conclusion

  • Customers running the Accelerator on IBM LinuxONE III hardware
    (IBM z15):
you need to apply driver D41C MCL bundle S91C (which includes
the patch MCL P46655.018) or later.
Bundle S91C was released on Oct 9, 2024.
Customers running the Accelerator on IBM LinuxONE Emperor 4
    hardware (IBM Z16):
you need to apply driver D51C MCL bundle S40 (which includes the
    patch P30754.010) or later.
Bundle S40 was released on Jan 15, 2025.
