Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM HTTP Server on zOS *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: During shutdown, processes kept busy by *
    * long running requests are eventually *
    *                      killed                                  *
    * with SIGKILL. Because the process is *
    * killed, it is hard to tell afterwards *
    *                      what was                                *
    *                      occurring.                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    In cases where child processes are killed this way, we will
    generally want to see what kind of request is being processed or
    what kind of timeout might be applied.

Problem conclusion

  • An environment variable was added to control extra actions to
    take when a process is slow to exit on zOS.

    IHS_CHILD_NOEXIT_ACTION can be set to "operconsole" or
    "ceedump".

    The value "operconsole" causes a message to be written to the
    operator console. The message will include the text 'CRIHS0007I'

    The value "ceedump" causes a SIGUSR2 to be sent to the
    process which will call the cdump() routine to write a CEEDUMP.
    Note: The CEEDUMP may be delayed and incomplete on modern zOS
    releases if_CEE_CONDWAIT_PAUSE=NO is not also set in the
    environment.

    The fix for this APAR is targeted for inclusion in IBM HTTP
    Server fix packs 8.5.5.27 and 9.0.5.21. For more information,
