Error description

  • For this issue, the error_log must first report an
    apr_thread_create error:
    ... (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: apr_thread_create:
    unable to create worker thread...
    Then almost immediately after, if mod_backtrace or
    mod_whatkilledus are present they may log a sig 11 or sig 7:
    .... pid 12345 mod_backtrace backtrace for sig 11 (thread "pid"
    12345)
    or
    ... pid 12345 mod_whatkilledus sig 11 crash

    The following message may also be logged, depending on the
    timing of the apr_thread_create error:
    ... (9)Bad file descriptor: apr_pollset_poll failed.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM HTTP Server with startup *
    *                  failures                                    *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: In cases where startup is doomed to *
    *                      fail due to apr_thread_create() errors, *
    * the server may crash *
    * before gracefully exiting. This crash *
    *                      symptom is a distraction from           *
    *                      troubleshooting the resource-           *
    * related thread creation failure. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    The thread creation failure happens so early that many other
    basic startup items are skipped, so some assumptions made during
    shutdown processing were invalid.

Problem conclusion

  • The code was updated to exit gracefully during resource related
    startup failures, avoiding crashing on the way out.

    The fix for this APAR is targeted for inclusion in IBM HTTP
    Server fix packs 8.5.5.26 and 9.0.5.20. For more information, se
