Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All CICS users. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: z/OS Health Checker using the same *
    * response bit to report disaster as well *
    * as health check failure message. *
    ****************************************************************
z/OS Health Checker runs the CICS health checks to find checks
which fail, they set flag bits into the 2 byte COMMAREA which is
to be returned. When it is examined in DFHHCCHK, messages are
issued dependent upon which flags are set. This allows up to 16
messages to be issued from one health check module.

If various things go wrong within an individual check, a
DISASTER response is set and reported with RC 1000 in the
information written to the CICS health check report.

With the recent health check enhancements for CICS TS 6.1, the
DISASTER bit was also being used as a flag bit. This means, the
bit could be used to issue either health check failure message
or a failure in one of the domain calls and cause confusion.

Problem conclusion

  • CICS has been changed to use other free bits in the COMMAREA to
report health check failure messages. Also, a new message is
added in each health check module to report disaster that one
or more tests have failed within the suite of checks.

The new messages being added are DFHH0415, DFHH0506, DFHH0604,
    DFHH0709 and DFHH0811.

Following new messages are added in health check modules to
report disaster that one or more tests have failed within the
    suite of checks.
