Error description

  • Unable to run multiple SMF EXTRACTORs in the one z/OS system.
    
    The buffering structure within the SMF Extractor task does not
    use 64 bit storage to hold SMF records until they are processed.

Problem summary

    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM Z Decision Support Version  *
    *                 1.9.0 and IBM Z Performance and Capacity     *
    *                 Analytics Version 3.1.0 who use the          *
    *                 SMF Extractor.                               *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: 1.The SMF EXTRACTOR runs out of storage *
    *                      for records when very busy.             *
    *                      2. It is not possible to run more than  *
    *                      one instance of the SMF Extractor in    *
    *                      an LPAR.                                *
    *                      3. ABEND S0C4 if a JCL parameter value  *
    *                      is coded incorrectly.                   *
    *                      4. Records lost when a temporary        *
    *                      logstream error occurs.                 *

    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the PTF provided.                      *
    ****************************************************************
    1.The SMF Extractor does not use 64-bit storage.
    2. There is no option to allow more than one SMF Extractor to
    execute in an LPAR.
    3. The SMF Extractor checks all values provided in the JCL
    parameters when it is started. It tries to issue an error
    message if any parameter is coded incorrectly but is attempting
    to use resources that are not yet allocated.
    4. SMF records may be lost when a temporary logstream
    error occurs.
    

Problem conclusion

  • 1.The internal buffering in the SMF Extractor is changed to
    use 64-bit storage.
    2. A parameter MULT(n) has been added to the list of options on
    the PARM= statement for module CKKXMAI to allow up to 10
    concurrent SMF Extractors in a single LPAR.
    3. The SMF Extractor has been modified to issue WTO messages
    for situations where messages need to be issued before
    resources are allocated.
    4. The code has been corrected to retry records after a
    temporary logstream error.
