Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.3 compiling and *
    * running programs containing one or more *
    *                 non-MOVE statements with a reference         *
    *                 modified UTF-8 (PIC U) sender data item      *
    * where the substring of the data item *
    * referred to by the reference modifier *
    *                 includes one or more multi-byte UTF-8        *
    *                 characters.                                  *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Incorrect runtime results. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the IBM-provided PTF.                  *
    ****************************************************************
    When a reference modified UTF-8 sender was used in a non-MOVE
    statement, in some contexts the compiler was not correctly
    converitng the specified character length of the reference
    modifier from characters to bytes, which is necessary when the
    underlying data item is a PIC U data item.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was updated to ensure that the byte-length of all
    reference-modified UTF-8 senders in non-MOVE statements is
    always computed correctly from the specified character length.
