PH53764: IMS ADMINISTRATION TOOL IMPORT OBJECTS JOB INITIALIZES IMS CATALOG DATABASE AT MIGRATING TO IMS-MANAGED ACBS

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• When migrating to IMS-managed ACBs by the Import Objects
  function of IMS Administration Tool, it is required to specify
  INITTLOAD=Y. INITLOAD=Y is an option of the Import Objects to
  initialize and perform initial load to the IMS catalog database.
  Because of this, the Import Objects job initializes an existing
  IMS catalog database that has been used since before migration.
  Currently, the Import Objects does not support the migration
  keeping the existing IMS catalog database.

Problem summary

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The import objects function can         *
  *                      initialize IMS catalog database while   *
  *                      migrating non-IMS-managed ACBs to       *
  *                      IMS-managed ACBs.                       *
  ****************************************************************
  * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the maintenance for this APAR.         *
  ****************************************************************
  This APAR addresses the following two issues:
  1) The import objects function does not have an option to
  support migration to IMS-managed ACBs. The "Initial Load"
  option is currently used for migration.
  However, the "Initial Load" option initializes the IMS catalog.
  Currently there is no option for migrating ACBs to IMS-managed
  ACBs and retaining DBD and PSB instances.
  
  2) When "Initial Load" is Y, the import objects function
  initializes the IMS directory and populates the IMS catalog,
  so the IMS system must be inactive.
  However, IMS directory is not configured when migrating ACBs to
  IMS-managed ACBs, and IMS catalog can be populated even when IMS
  system is active.
  Therefore, the import objects function should be changed so it
  can run even when the IMS system is active.
  

Problem conclusion

• This APAR changes the import object function as follows:
  1) Introduced new option "Migrate to Managed ACBs". Also,
  existing option "Initial Load" is renamed to "Initialize IMSCat
  Database".
  These changes are applicable only to the ISPF interface.
  
  2) Import objects jobs can run whether the IMS system is active
  or inactive. However, when it processes IMS-managed ACBs and
  if Y is specified for "Initialize IMSCat Database" (or Y for
  "Initial Load" when the web interface is used), the IMS system
  must be inactive.
