Error description

  • Migrating to the latest version of the SMF Extractor
without an intervening system IPL may cause an overlay
in the CSA storage causing the system to crash.

    Migration from version

    VSX0001I VSXUT1 Build: Version 4.7.1.M66 12/11/19 14.45

    ****************************************************************
IBM provides an anchor point for our products, within this
anchor point we have a pointer to an anchor area for the
SMF Extractor. This anchor area for the SMF Extractor is in
CSA storage. With the change in version of the SMF Extractor,
the anchor area increased in size from 144 bytes to 200 bytes.
Once this area is allocated, it is persistent until the next
IPL. Therefore, when the old SMF Extractor was stopped and
new SMF Extractor started without an IPL the smaller CSA anchor
area was reused, and not reallocated at the larger size.

Problem conclusion

  • This new version of the SMF Extractor sets a version number in
the CSA anchor area, allowing for future expansion (if required)
    without impacting other systems.
This new version also checks the SMF Extractor CSA anchor area
for a constant, that does not exist in older SMF Extractor CSA
anchor areas, thus allowing this new SMF Extractor version to
be implemented without the requirement of an IPL.
