Error description

  • When trying to set the JDWP service address to a specific IP
address and port via the WebSphere Application Server for z/OS
    admin console at
Application servers > "ServerName" > Java and Process
Management > Process definition > Servant > Java Virtual
    Machine

    like this:

    agentlib:jdwp=transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=xx
    x.xxx.xxx.xxx:pppp

no change is actually applied. The trace message shows:
BBOO0220E: SRVE0014E: Uncaught service() exception root cause
    action: javax.servlet.ServletException:
    java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string:
    "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:pppp"

Local fix

  • The change can be applied either via the Admin console or using
    wsadmin scripting.

    Using the Administrative Console:

    1. Navigate to Servers > Server Types > WebSphere application
servers > "ServerName" > Debugging Service (under Additional
    Properties)
disable the service, and save the changes.

    2. Restart the server

    3. Navigate to WebSphere Application servers > "ServerName" >
Java and Process Management > Process definition > Servant >
Java Virtual Machine and set the address argument to the
desired IP_Address:port format under the Debug arguments and
    save the changes.
    4. Navigate back to the Debugging service page, enable the
    service, and save the changes
    5. Restart the server
    6. Navigate back to the Servant JVM configuration page and
verify that the address argument is in the desired host:port
format that was set in step 3

    Using wsadmin:

    1. Start the wsadmin environment
    2. Issue the wsadmin command with the respective node/server
names as well as desired IP_address and port number:

    AdminTask.setJVMProperties('[-nodeName node_name -serverName
    server_name -verboseModeClass false
    -verboseModeGarbageCollection true -verboseModeJNI false
-runHProf false -hprofArguments -debugMode false -debugArgs "-a
    gentlib:jdwp=transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=xxx
    .xxx.xxx.xxx:pppp"-executableJarFileName -genericJvmArguments -d

    3. Run AdminConfig.save() and exit wsadmin

    4. Navigate back to the Servant JVM configuration page on the
admin console, and verify that the address argument is in the
desired host:port format that was set through the wsadmin
    command

Example of JDWP address format that does not work:
    agentlib:jdwp=transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=xx
    x.xxx.xxx.xxx:pppp

Problem conclusion

  • To prevent this issue a change was made so that the JDWP address
could be set in the IP:PORT format.

The fix for this APAR is targeted for inclusion in fix pack
8.5.5.22 and 9.0.5.11. For more information, see 'Recommended
