Error description

  • After upgrading to ClearCase 9.0.1.9, complex IBM ClearCase
build environments that use .NOTPARALLEL targets for operations
like inline unit testing of builds may stall indefinitely if
build host overrides are also in use.

ClearCase 9.0.1.9 incorporates changes to build host override
behavior to address APAR PM13901, where multiple non-identical
target-specific build host overrides can cause clearmake to
spawn a very large number of single-use build sessions, which
was shown to lead to clearmake crashing. Use of .NOTPARALLEL
targets seems to introduce build stalls if remote build sessions
    do not start correctly.

To determine if you are impacted by this issue, run the build
session with clearmake -d. Clearmake will print the string
"Target {name} was salvaged from a dead abe. Build continues."
That message presages the build stall. Once the build stalls,
send a SIGUSR1 to the clearmake process using "kill -SIGUSR1
`pgrep clearmake`" If there are currently no abe sessions
running, you will see an immediate print of the pending, ready,
and active targets. The message can be delayed by 5 minutes or
more if there are still open abe sessions. The target or targets
mentioned in the previous message will be listed as active
targets even if there are no build sessions currently active.
