APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Running CICS with Liberty, the following error is repeatedly
issued to the Liberty messages.log file:

    javax.resource.spi.RetryableUnavailableException: limit
for number of MessageEndpoint proxies reached. Limit =
    500

After this point the JVM is no longer able to process any
CICS LINK requests. The log file contained numerous
NullPointerExceptions where the application was failing (500
errors in total). Eventually the JVM had to be recycled to allow
    the application to continue processing.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All CICS Users. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The maximum number of MessageEndpoint *
    * proxies is reached, resulting in all *
    * subsequent EXEC CICS LINKs to Liberty *
    *                      applications to fail.                   *
    ****************************************************************
If an exception is thrown in a Link to Liberty application,
the CICS Link Listener does not clean up properly. If this
happens 500 times the following exception occurs:

    javax.resource.spi.RetryableUnavailableException: limit
for number of MessageEndpoint proxies reached. Limit =
    500

The Link Listener Service becomes unavailable and all EXEC CICS
LINKs to Liberty applications will fail with INVREQ, RESP2=53.

Problem conclusion

  • CICSMessageWorker.java has been changed so that the Message
Endpoint is released when an exception is thrown.

PH14856 resolves this problem in CICS 5.5.
