  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Upgrading from WebSphere Application Server v8.5 to v9.0 failed
    in the post migration step with the message:
    java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "*"

    Tracing implied the failure occurred while parsting the
    virtualhosts.xml file when it came across a HostAlias entry
    where port"*", such as:

    <aliases xmi:id="HostAlias_1462712271633"
    hostname="subdomain.yourdomain.com" port="*"/>

    WebSphere Knowledge Center documentation indicates that the
    asterisk/wildcard is a valid value for port.

Local fix

  • Temporarily delete the HostAlias with the port="*" or update
    the port value with a numeric value then re-run the post
    migration step. Once successfully migrated, redefine the
    HostAlias with port="*".

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: NumberFormatException occurs while *
    *                      running WASPostUpgrade while            *
    *                      processing virtual hosts.               *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    WASPostUpgrade encounters a NumberFormatException while
    processing virtual hosts because a host alias has "*"
    specified as the value for a port. WASPostUpgrade is assuming
    that the port value must be an integer, even though * is a
    permissible value, so it does not guard against this
    possibility.
