APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Delays in response from an ESM may result in the system going
Short on Shortage (SOS) in high private LSQA 24bit storage.
Resulting in abends, such as S878 and S80A.
LSQA contains TCBs and parmlists for the ESM. CICS L8 TCBs are
not disassociated from the task after being used for calling the
ESM. Therefore, storage remains for the duration of the task. If
there is a backlog of tasks, due to delays in ESM response time,
then their combined storage usage can exceed the available LSQA.

Local fix

  • reduce SIT parm DSALIM

    *                      LSQA.                                   *
    ****************************************************************
It is possible to suffer abend80A and abend878 when a large
number of security calls are being issued to the External
    Security Manager (ESM).
Each of the calls to the ESM use an L8 TCB. Each of these TCBs
will use some LSQA storage which can eventually run out.
The L8 TCB is being held for longer than the actual security
call making the exhaustion of the LSQA more likely should the
ESM suffer some sort of response slow down.

Problem conclusion

  • CICS has been changed to release the L8 TCB as soon as the
    security call has completed.
