Error description

  • When performing a parallel or distributed build using clearmake
    in 9.0.1.x, clearmake or the Automated Build Executor (abe) may
    report apparently random signal numbers and terminate the build.

    The error messages will appear in the following sequence:
    abe: Warning: Process termination for PID xxxxx not caught by
    signal handler thread
    abe: Error: Commands terminated by signal yyyyy

    "yyyyy" will be variable. In *this instance* the termination is
    not by the signal in question. It appears that this is a race
    condition between clearmake's and abe's normal process
    termination logic and the "backup" process termination logic.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * ClearCase clearmake may print out a warning message with an *
    * invalid signal number when a sub-process exits without *
    * properly being detected by the abe. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • A fix is available in ClearCase version 9.0.1.7 - The invalid
    signal number is corrected to provide the correct number, and a
    few more checks are performed to provide more specific
    information on the process termination.
