Error description
OpenJPA currently only loads their descriminator class cache once. If any classes are not registered at that time, they will not be available for future cache checks, leading to inaccurate ClassNotFoundExceptions. The fix for this will be to update OpenJPA to allow the cache to be updated as classes become loaded and registered with the MetaDataRepository. The problem can be observed in applications that make use of JPA discriminators. For classes not registered in the cache, exceptions are seen as follows: -- org.apache.openjpa.persistence.ArgumentException: Could not map discriminator value "SUBCLASS_OF_A" to any known subclasses of the requested class "A" --

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V8.5 - Java Persistence API - JPA * * 2.0 & OpenJPA * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The discriminator class cache throws * * CNFEs if classes are not registered * * in time * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** OpenJPA currently only loads their descriminator class cache once. If any classes are not registered at that time, they will not be available for future cache checks, leading to inaccurate ClassNotFoundExceptions. The is a very short race condition that results in CNFE from OpenJPA's discriminator class cache.
Problem conclusion
The fix for this APAR changes the OpenJPA implementation and involves an update to the thirdparty source. See https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OPENJPA-2767 This fix is currently targeted for WebSphere Application Server 9.0.5.1, 8.5.5.16, and WebSphere Liberty 19.0.0.7.
