Error description

  • Affected mobile development environments: iOS, Android
    Mobile Devices Operating Systems impacted: iOS, Android
    User roles impacted: User
    Distribution: Fix Central, DevCenter
    Versions affected: 8.0
    In a server farm/cluster environment, if a server node is shut
    down but the load balancer is still routing requests to that
    node, direct update will fail. And the app will enter an
    inrecoverable state. On iOS, the direct update progress will be
    stuck at 0%. On Android, the the direct update process seems to
    complete successfully, but after app reload, File Not Found
    Exception will be seen and the app needs to be reinstalled to
    recover from the unusable state.

Local fix

  • - To reinstall the app.
    - Or stop routing requests to the stopped node.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * When a direct update to an app fails in certain conditions, *
    * the app assumes that an update of an incorrect size has been *
    * received and fails to complete the direct update rendering *
    * the app in an irrecoverable state. On iOS the symptom is the *
    * app is stuck at 0% download, whereas on Android, the update *
    * appears to go through successfully but fails to process the *
    * downloaded update.                                           *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * -                                                            *
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • This scenario of direct update data size 0 is identified and a
    failure callback is thrown to the app's code which in turn will
    throw a direct update failure message to the user.
