Error description

  • A customer is reporting that when attempting to create a
    calculation on a dashboard, then using that calculated field as
    a filter, filtering does not work. This is only the case when
    the calculation references a non-numeric column.
    
    Generally, calculations cannot be made on non-numeric columns,
    but doing this is 'possible' by selecting a numeric column from
    navigation, creating a calculation, then adding in a non-numeric
    column name manually to the expression (type in column name to
    expression in calculation wizard).
    
    This is seen by support as a work around to achieve a behavior
    that is not the intended design of the product. We believe
    taking this unusual action to create a calculated field is the
    reason for the field's inability to be used as a filter. The
    reason for creating this calculated column was simply a work
    around to give a column a new name.
    
    I have raised this as an APAR logged against documentation
    because if there is a defect here, I believe it is the fact that
    when a user attempts to create a calculated field with a
    non-numeric column, they should be met with an error message. It
    seems clear that we do not expect users to create calculations
    on non-numeric columns since users cannot do so by selecting the
    column from navigation; it can only be done by manually adding
    the column name to an expression after choosing the numeric
    column to prompt the calculation wizard.

    is not design intent.
