Error description

  • During task initialization, if the task will employ SQL, a DB2
plan is opened. After the plan is open it is tested with a
simple SQL request. The success of that request is taken to
indicate that the plan is usable. Unfortunately, since the SQL
does not access any tables, it succeeds even if the plan was
not properly bound. Thus, if the plan was not properly bound,
execution continues until the first table access, at which
point the SQL fails. This failure does not present externally,
and so is not available for action based on automation. Test
SQL immediately after the plan is opened must attempt to access
a table to adequately test the successful opening of the DB2
    plan.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When a DB2 plan is opened, an innocuous *
    * SQL statement is executed to test that *
    * the plan was successfully opened. The *
    * SQL is of such a character that it does *
    * not actually test the plan availability *
    * adequately. If the plan had failed to *
    * open, it will be found later, when the *
    * first productive SQL is executed. This *
    * is too late after initialization, and *
    * is not presented in a console message, *
    * so it may be unnoticed for a long time. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY CORRECTIVE SERVICE *
    ****************************************************************

A test for the successful opening of DB2 plans is not adequate
to actually prove the plan is available.

Problem conclusion

  • SQL that actually accesses a table will be used to prove the
    availability of DB2 plans.
