Error description

  • Service Manager Application issues a CLSDST PASS to initiate
a CrossNet session. Intermittently, the INIT OTHER 810680
fails with SENSE 08570002 issued out of ISTSSCUC. It appears
that VTAM is getting confused between which resource is the
    OLU.

In order for this problem to occur you minimally need a 2-host
    cross-domain configuration.
The problem occurs during CLSDST PASS processing when the
INITOTHER is processed. When the INITOTHER is a result of
third party initiation, as in the case of CLSDST PASS,
INIT OTHER processing determines who will be the OLU and who
will be the DLU for the new session. This determination
is based on several factors, including whether or not the
resources are known to this host and whether they are owned
    by this host.
In the case that uncovered the error, the SLU was found to
be a CDRSC and the PLU was found to be owned by this host.
However, the PLU was inactive on this host. (It must be
noted, however, that the PLU was active on another host.)
The parsing module ignores the fact that the PLU is
inactive and, based on the RDTEs that were found, it
assigned the PLU as the OLU and the SLU as the DLU. Then
session setup processing continued. Session setup failed
shortly after, when checking was done to see if the resources
were available. The OLU was found to be inactive, resulting
in session initiation failing with sense code 08570002.
However, if you change this configuration slightly so that
the SLU is an LU owned by this host rather than a cross
domain resource, and if keep everything else the same, the
session setup will work. This is because in this case, the
SLU would be the OLU and the PLU would be the DLU.
DLU processing allows in certains cases LUs that are not active
to be pushed into shadow set and looked for on another host.
Similar processing is required for our case.

Problem conclusion

  • VTAM INITOTHER processing was changed to invoke INITOTHER_CD
processing when the SLU is not in this host and the PLU is on
this host but not active. This way, if the PLU is found active
on another host, the session should set up.
To accomplish this, 3 modules were changed: ISTSSCBI, ISTSSCEP,
    and ISTSSCFD.
