OA67427: ABEND S002-46 AFTER ENCRYPTION OF BASIC VB DATASET WITH SMALL BLOCKSIZE ZDMF/K

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• If zDMF is used to encrypt a basic or large RECFM=V[B] dataset,
  an abend S002-46 can occur when the dataset is later read
  if a block less than 16 bytes was written.
  

Local fix

Problem summary

• ****************************************************************
  * USERS AFFECTED: Trying to encrypt a variable length file     *
  *                 that has a blocksize less than 16.           *

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When accessing the encrypted file, when *
  *                      an encrypted block with a length of     *
  *                      less than 16, an abend S002-0046 will   *
  *                      be generated.                           *
  ****************************************************************
  * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF(s).                   *
  ****************************************************************
  z/OS SMS requires that a block to be encrypted must be at least
  16 bytes in length.
  

Problem conclusion

• If a block with a length of less than 16 bytes is found,
  message GZD0803E will be WTO'd and sent to the zDMF database
  stating that the file can not be encrypted and the encryption
  will fail.  The file will be left in its original state.
