Error description

  • When SYNCIO Read or Write processing has been requested by an
    application but cannot be used due to a customer correctable
    reason (ex. zHPF is disabled), the number of such requests are
    accumulated and reported by Media Manager in the
    Synchronous I/O Sections 2 and 3 of SMF 42 records (subtypes 5
    and 6) while the request is satisfied by MM using
    non-SYNCIO processingie. asynchronous I/O).

    However, based on the MM non-SYNCIO processing performed, it is
    possible that the number of attempted SYNCIO requests (S42SNRDT,
    S42SNWTT) will not be recorded in Synchronous I/O Section 1
    (which is shared between subtype 5 and 6 SMF 42 records). This
    can result in the Synchronous I/O Section 1 portion of the SMF
    42 record to be empty.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * SyncIO errors detected by Media Manager are reported in SMF *
    * Record Type 42, subtype 5 and 6 SyncIO Sections 2 and 3,     *
    * but not SyncIO Section 1. This occurred when a SyncIO error *
    * was detected by Media Manager and the SyncIO Exit was not *
    * called.                                                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *

Problem conclusion

  • The driver layer software now passes information to the device
    layer indicating a SyncIO error was detected. SyncIO Section 1
    now contains the SyncIO Attempts recorded in Section 2 and 3.
