Error description

  • An ABEND878 can occur due to ELSQA sp249 storage shortage when
an initiator address space sees a build up of CIST control
blocks over time. The CIST is a table associated to the SHOWCAT
    and SHOWCB macros.

    | CIST.. .......}. |
    | .........dsname. |

In Initiator address spaces which persist, these CIST control
blocks will remain orphaned instead while new CIST blocks are
acquired anew. Over time if the Initiatior is not restarted or
drained, this accumulation can lead to an abend878

    ADDITIONAL SYMPTOMS:
    CATKEYS: CAT2021 CATABEND

Local fix

  • BYPASS/CIRCUMVENTION:
VSM CHECKREGIONLOSS in DIAGxx can be used to automatically
releive storage issues in the Initiator by setting a threshold
and automatically recycling the initiator when storage begins to
creep. VSM CHECKREGIONLOSS(256K,10M) is a default and can be
increased by 10M if found it is recycling too often

    RECOVERY ACTION:
Drain initiators if abend878s are actively occurring

    WLM Managed
    $P XEQ
    P INIT,A= (D A,INIT to find init#)
$S XEQ (once initiator fully inactive in SDSF)

    JES2 Managed
$PInn (where nn is init #)
    $SInn

Problem conclusion

  • The Catalog component has been updated to ensure that these
control blocks are freed at the end of the step.
