Error description

  • During command statistics collection, some entries in the data
    table are all zeroes. This results in an interpreted time value
    of all 00's to the wrap time of the system clock - 9/17/2042
    19:53:47.
    add'l symptoms;
    1.  Abend0C4 in module DSICSREC at offset '644' - reg14 bad.
    reg14 is loaded from reg6 +8 where reg6 -> CSWKA, then reg15
    is added which results in invalid storage address. Overlays
    of CPOOL header occur resulting in other task abends and
    various symptoms seemingly unrelated to CMDMON; eg. IRXTERMA
    not found caused task abend0c4.
    .
    2. Abend0C4 in module DSIDRS at offset +1DCC. Reg 4
    contains ebcdic D3C5E7F3 loaded from Reg 3 +18 - storage
    overlaid with CMDMON CSW table data.
    .
    3. Abend0C4 in DSIGMN at 208A Reg8 points to invalid
    storage adadress. Reg8 loaded from cpool table which
    pointed to cpool cell overlaid by CMDMON CSW table data.
    .
    add'l keywords;
    overlay overlayed abends0c4

    The Command Statistics function saves data records in a region
    of global NetView storage that is potentially accessed by
    multiple tasks at the same time. For this reason, access to this
    global storage is controlled by a latch. Because the latch being
    obtained is shared, other instructions (such as Compare And
    Swap) are used to ensure that the storage is updated in a
    synchronous manner. However, despite this controlled access,
    users who have configured their systems with many CPUs are
    vulnerable to experiencing the symptoms listed above due to the
    shared latch access, which allows for multiple control block
    fields being updated by multiple tasks at the same time.

Problem conclusion

  • Module DSICSREC is being changed so that all write access to the
    Command Statistics data table is controlled with an exclusive
    latch. Read access (i.e., CMDMON DISPLAY) remains controlled
    with a shared latch. In addition, another bug was discovered in
    which a manual data capture (using the CMDMON CAPTURE command)
    followed by an automatic capture would potentially result in
    duplicate records being written to the data set that is
    allocated by the capture program (by default, sample CNMSCSDP).
    Module DSICSREC is being changed to correct this problem, so
    that only new data is sent to the capture program every time,
    regardless of whether the capture is manual or automatic.
