Error description
After encountering a abendDM763 in IATOSBP, JES3 recovery fails to properly manage the file directory (FD) count; thereby causing the FD buffer count to go negative. This prevents any subsequent processing from being able to locate an available FD, resulting in messages: IAT6397 FCT ISDRVR (NODEVICE) WAITING FOR FILE DIRECTORY ENTRY Various FCTs may be impacted awaiting a FD entry. This can impact overall system processing such as preventing TSO logons, and SYSLOG buffer shortage message msgIEE767A IEE767A SEVERE BUFFER SHORTAGE FOR SYSTEM LOG - 100% FULL This scenario can be resolved with a JES3 hotstart. ANALYSIS: As part of the FDADD various linkages have been made between the newly obtained FD and FCT/FDB, but this is prior to the TVTFDUSE count is incremented (label FDADD80). Following the DM763, the recovery path still decrements the count (via FDDEL) making it negative. Processing thereafter that requires a FD will encounter a negative TVTFDUSE count causing a delay for FD buffers that will never be relieved. KNOWN IMPACT: Various JE3 FCTs delayed awaiting FD entry, impacting overall function. Eventually, this can impact overall system function such as TSO logons, SYSLOG recording and any other processes that will require JES3 services. VERIFICATION STEPS: 1) DM763 in IATOSBP 2) IAT6397 for FCTs awaiting FD entries 3) Dump of JES3 indicates negative TVTFDUSE value (see halfword value at TVT+BA8) The projected closing code is PER for HJS77A0 and above.
Local fix
Apply PTF for OA55084 - doing so will avoid the initial DM763 so that the error during recovery (decrement of the FD count through zero) is also avoided. RECOVERY ACTION: JES3 hot start will clear the condition. An IPL is not required.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: * * All users of HJS77A0, HJS77B0, and HJS77C0. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: * * FOLLOWING DM763, MSGIAT6397 FCT ISDRVR * * (NODEVICE) WAITING FOR FILE DIRECTORY * * ENTRY. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** While JES3 module IATMOOI was processing a *MODIFY U command, job output was encountered whose job number in the VALID array failed validation. As a result, module IATDMNC's FDADD routine raised ABENDDM763. After recovery for module IATMOOI completed, the running count of File Directory (FD) entries was found to have been decremented from hex 0000 to hex FFFF. The latter value made it appear there were a large number of FDs in use, exceeding the maximum allowed. New FDs were not allowed, impacting various FCTs wanting to acquire a FD entry. This scenario can be resolved with a JES3 hotstart. NOTE: It is recommended to install the PTF(s) for OA55084, which may avoid the initial ABENDDM763. Avoiding this abend reduces the possibility of incurring the recovery error fixed by OA57397.
Problem conclusion
Installation On (Global) Order (Any) Activation Order (Any) Type/JES3 restart (Hot) Type/IPL (None) CLPA (No) (See Apar II07968 for definitions) Module IATDMNC was changed to delay raising ABENDDM763 until after the running count of FD entries (TVTFDUSE) has been incremented. By doing so, decrementing the count during IATMOOI's recovery will not cause the count to be changed to hex FFFF.
