• Closed as documentation error.

Error description

• User submits a job that specifies AVGREC=U,
  SPACE=(CYL(1000,500)) and volume count greater than 1.
  The data set is initially allocated in cylinders on the first
  volume. Several extents are created  on the first volume in
  cylinders.  When we extend to the second volume, the allocation
  request is changed to tracks.  This eventually may lead to
  IEC023I abend837 rc08 when we run out of volumes.
  
  This problem originally occurred with IFASMFDP however can be
  recreated with any job that allocates a data set with the above
  parameters and causes the job to extend to a subsequent volume.
  
  JCL Reference does state: Do not code AVGREC with the TRK, CYL,
  or ABSTR subparameters of the SPACE parameter.  However, it
  should be made clear that when you do this will result.
  

Local fix

• Remove AVGREC=U or change the SPACE to specify record values.

   | space for the data set in ways that are inconsistent
   | with AVGREC space allocation. This may lead to
   | unpredictable errors or abend conditions.
