Error description

  • IEA031I STP ALERT RECEIVED. STP ALERTCODE = 01 issued which
    according to the documentation means 'ETS not in use - an
    External Time Source (ETS) has not been defined for the
    Coordinated Time Network (CTN).' The message was incorrectly
    issued in this case because the actual alert code received from
    the hardware was Alert code 04 qualifier 01 (i.e. ALERTB
    contained 03030401) indicating a 'timing-only link loss'. The
    message needs to clearly indicate the actual error.
    EXTERNAL SYMPTOMS:
     IEA031I
    VERIFICATION STEPS:
     1. Take a dump of Master as close to the incorrect message as
        possible:
         DUMP COMM=(STP PROBLEM)
         R xx,ASID=1,SDATA=(ALLNUC,PSA,CSA,SQA,LPA,SUM,TRT),END
     2.  In IPCS issue:
         IP L 10?+58?+8C?+1DC len(4)
         IP L 10?+58?+8C?+1E8 len(4)
         If the contents of either list command contain xxxx0401
         then an alert code 04 qualifier 01 was received.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Server Time Protocol (STP) users running *
    *                 at z/OS HBB7790 and above.                   *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: MSGIEA031I was issued with an STP *
    * alert code 01 due to an STP timing *
    * link that was momentarily lost. The *
    * alert code was correct, but the *
    *                      documentation notes a different reason  *
    * for STP alert code 01. STP alert code *
    * 01 has multiple meanings, which needs *
    *                      to be addressed.                        *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    The STP alert codes specified in IEA031I are no longer unique.
    They are really STP alert reason codes (or STP alert code
    qualifiers) associated to specific STP alert code conditions.

    Additional search keywords:  STP/K

Problem conclusion

  • Replace IEA031I with new message MSGIEA037I that will display
    both the STP alert code condition and its STP alert reason
    code (or STP alert code qualifier). The STP alert reason
    code is similar to the alert code that was issued in IEA031I.

    IEA031I will still be issued, but only to hardcopy.

    IBM recommends to use IEA037I to monitor STP alerts instead of
    IEA031I.
