Error description

  • After an abend0c4 in MMF cleanup (module IGWMCNUP) a steady
    storage increase in the SMSVSAM address space was encountered in
    SP229 key5. After a couple of days SMSVSAM finally ran out of
    private storage below and above the line and terminated with an
    abend0c6.

    The storage in SP229 Key5 is filled with control blocks
    for MMF message processing, which have eyecatchers like
    IGWMXMSG and IGWMCDTA.

    The reason for the storage increase is, that the initial S0C4
    disabled MMF, nevertheless the storage for MMF message
    processing is allocated, but not released anymore.

    Additional symptoms are:

    Abend0f4 rsn253DC003 in IGWFVGTM
    Abend0f4 rsn6521FB2C in IGWSGMSG
    Abend0f4 rsn6D7D2714 in IGWFCPER

Local fix

  • Restart SMSVSAM

    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Storage leak in private SP229 Key5 if *
    * RLS Measurement Management Facility *
    * (MMF) is disabled after an ABEND when *
    * another system attempts to collect *
    *                      statistics.                             *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    If the RLS Measurement Management Facility (MMF) is
    disabled due to an ABEND in the MMF path, subsequent requests
    from other systems to collect statistics data will result in
    a memory leak because the message block is not freed.

Problem conclusion

  • Updated MMF code to properly free message block when MMF is
    disabled and handling a request for statistics from another
    system.
