APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • If backup copies are made of a dataset using HBACKDS with the
    NEWNAME parm the MCB information for the backup copy will have
    MCBVER of '0000'. Following this, if AUDIT DSCTL(BACKUP) is
    performed, *ERR 35 messages and FIXCDS commands are generated
    that attempt to set the MCBGEN value to '0001' regardless of the
    number of backup versions are present in the MCB.

Local fix

  • Backup copies can still be recovered using GEN(x) or DATE/TIME
    parms.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All DFSMShsm users of the AUDIT *
    *                 DATASETCONTROLS(BACKUP) command.             *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The (H)BACKDS NEWNAME DATE command *
    * will result in MCBGEN=0. Followed by *
    *                      running the AUDIT DSCTL(BACKUP) command *
    * will result in ERR35 for the new backup *
    *                      version. ERR35 suggests the MCBGEN      *
    * field value, be modified to 1. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    AUDIT DSCTL(BACKUP) encounters MCBGEN=0 value then issues ERR35
    suggesting the MCBGEN value should be patched to 1. Since
    (H)BACKDS NEWNAME DATE always results in the MCBGEN value being
    set to 0, it is incorrect for AUDIT DATASETCONTROLS(BACKUP) to
    change this value. AUDIT DSCTL(BACKUP) should not issue the
    ERR35 when MCBGEN=0.

Problem conclusion

    z/OS DFSMShsm Storage Administration book, publication
    # SC23-6871-01 (applies to all V1R13 and later releases).

    Section - Optional parameters of the BACKDS command, at the end
    of the optional parameter NEWNAME, the final bullet under the
    'Note:' currently contains the following information;

    A backup version created with the (H)BACKDS NEWNAME will always
    have a VERSION NUMBER = 000.

    This should be changed to;
    A backup version created with the (H)BACKDS NEWNAME DATE will
    always have a VERSION NUMBER = 000.
