Error description

  • Customer was attempting to decommission a disk control unit
to configure a new disk control unit in it's place.
A new IODF was created and activated, dynamically, for the new
Configuration. Upon completion of the activate, devices for the
new CU, experienced the IOS291I with RC=20,
TOKEN NED MISMATCH HAS BEEN DETECTED.
This mismatch was due to the prior control unit instance which
has not been completely deleted by the prior dynamic activate.
The ACTIVATE processing should have completely removed the
SSCB(s) for the old CU due to an OUTSTANDING CUIR event.
IOS will need to honor the ACTIVATE command intent of the
new IODF to delete an OLD control unit completely when
    there are outstanding CUIR events.

Local fix

  • Customers are encouraged to use the
D M=CONFIG(xx) command to verify the intended online
device configuration. Use of this command will show
deviations which would have reminded the customer about the
outstanding CUIR event. Do not attempt the activate to remove
control units while the CUIR event is outstanding.

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
During a Dynamic ACTIVATE to replace a control unit with one
using different channel paths, if a path connected to the old
control unit has an outstanding CUIR QUIESCE on it, IOS will
neglect to remove its internal Configuration Data Records for
that path. As a result, when the new control unit is added,
IOS does not create new instances of this control unit in its
internal configuration blocks, causing a mismatched
representation of the configuration. Devices connected to the
new control unit will fail to come online and message
IOS291I CONFIGURATION DATA COULD NOT BE READ ON PATH(dddd,cc)
RC=21 TOKEN NED MISMATCH HAS BEEN DETECTED will be issued.

Problem conclusion

  • When a new subchannel is made available, if the paths have
changed, IOS will ensure the Configuration Data Records for the
device are completely deleted even if an outstanding CUIR
QUIESCE exists for one of the old paths.

When all devices are deleted from the Configuration Data Table,
the control block representing the control unit will be deleted.
As a result, a new control block for the new control unit will
be created and the new devices will be added as part of the
records that represent the new control unit when the devices
    are brought online.
