APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• ESQA may become exhausted during NIP processing with alternate
  subchannel set devices offline.
  
  Analysis of ESQA storage shows SLFP control blocks containing
  SSCBs were the highest consumers of storage.  There will be
  multiple SSCBs for the same control unit, with these control
  units containing 3390D alternate subchannel set devices.

Problem summary

  * USERS AFFECTED: D/T3990 D/T2107 D/T2105 users that configure *
  *                 PPRC Secondary, FlashCopy Target, and FBA    *
  *                 volumes in an Alternate Subchannel Set.      *
  ****************************************************************
  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: DASD UIM did not indicate that 3390D    *
  *                      and 3390S volumes should remain         *
  *                      offline.  This caused IOS to allocate a *
  *                      Subsystem Control Block (SSCB) each     *
  *                      time it encountered one of these        *
  *                      devices.  Eventually, ESQA storage was  *
  *                      exhausted.                              *

  * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *

  This APAR will indicate that base volumes configured to an
  Alternate Subchannel Set, including PPRC Secondary volumes and
  FlashCopy Target volumes and FBA volumes, should remain offline
  when the operating system is IPLed.
