    ****************************************************************
Some customers want to use WORM tape with DFSMShsm functions
other than ABARS even though HSM does not provide
any specific considerations for WORM tape with those functions.

Comments

  • By default DFSMShsm will only allow WORM tape to be used as
ABACKUP target tape. This support allows all DFSMShsm tape
functions to use WORM tape. It can be enabled via:

    PATCH .MCVT.+286 BITS(1.......)

    and disabled (the default) via:

    PATCH .MCVT.+286 BITS(0.......)

Although IBM has tested the use of WORM tape with the various
DFSMShsm functions, it is up to the user to decide if using
WORM tape with DFSMShsm functions is appropriate. These
functions were not designed to be archival and so have some
limitations users should consider before implementing them.

Since the support is passive, HSM treats WORM tapes the same
    way it treats R/W tapes.
Migration allows recall with subsequent re-migration of
data sets using the same data set names. Even though the
original form of a data set remains on tape, only the last
version will be known to DFSMShsm.

Data sets on tape tend to move from one tape volume to another
via the Recycle function. If Recycle is allowed, there is no
guaranteed relationship between a data set and a tape volser.
DFSMShsm does not inherently split a function's data between
different tape media types. The user must manage this.

If DFSMShsm is patched to use WORM tapes and then later patched
to not use WORM tapes, mark all of the WORM tapes full so they
are not selected for output. Any usage of WORM tapes for
output in an HSM not patched to use them will generally result
    in failure.
