Error description

  • This problem occurs when reading a certain mail message from Web
    browser.

    1. Put the attached mail database for this PMR at the data
    directory of a 8.5.2 server.
    2. Open the mail file from Web browser.
    3. The mail message is in Japanese but seeing the message, the
    text is not correctly shown.
    4. Keep displaying the message, manually choose [View] -
    [Encode] - [Japanese (Autodection)] from the menu of the
    browser.
    5. The customer expects to see Japanese text but the result is
    still broken.

    If you use the same mail database on 7.0.2 server, the mail
    message is first displays unreadable characters at the step 3
    but it show correct Japanese text after doing the step 4.

    Testing the operation, it turned out that changing encoding
    fails to display from 7.0.3 or after. If the version of Domino
    server is 7.0.2 or before, the text is displayed correctly if
    explicitly changing encoding.

    The root cause of the problem is that the MIME source of this
    particular message sets incorrect character set. A part of the
    mail message is written in Shift_JIS whose transfer encoding is
    in quoted-printable. The MIME source, however, specifies
    ISO-8859-1 for the character set.

    ------=_NextPart_000_1E087C_01CC147D.6BC9DA40
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
    Content-Type: text/html;
       charset="iso-8859-1"

    If this part sets the correct character set as the next
    paragraph, the problem does not occur. Opening the message,
    correct Japanese text is displayed from the first time.

    ------=_NextPart_000_1E087C_01CC147D.6BC9DA40
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
    Content-Type: text/html;
       charset="Shift_JIS"
