Error description

  • a customer who has a problem that is only reproducible when they
    have the data
dir on a file server. The customer understands that it is not
    supported, but
wishes to share his findings (from troubleshooting this issue)
    with our dev.

    From the PMR 43685,001,806:

    Case

Trouble using Lotus Notes 8.5.1 on Windows Vista / Windows 7 /
    Windows Server
2008 Client with ID Vault , where the id file is stored on a
    file share.

    Possibly due to SMB2 compatibility

    Scenario

    - Lotus Notes 8.5.1 installed on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or
    Windows Server
    2008.

    - Lotus notes data directory on a network share on a Windows
    Server 2008.

    - Lotus notes started with shortcut "c:\Program
    Files\IBM\Louts\notes\notes.exe" =z:\notes\data\notes.ini
(Where z: is mapped to \\fileserver\fileshare)

    - ID file is missing from data directory

    - ID Vault is configured and operating

Users is prompted for a password, the password is accepted
Notes fails when trying to create the ID file in the data
    directory and
    presents the following error message:

"Could not open the ID file"

In the event log on the client side you will find the following
    event:

    Reason:

Investigations made has led us to believe this is related to
    SMBv2

Above is the original description of the problem. We have
    created a work-around
for the problem by installing a separate Windows 2003 server
    where we put the
users ID files. This server is not using the SMBv2 protocol, but
    the old SMB
protocol. We were not able to just disable the SMBv2 protocol on
    the file
server because we needed the performance of the SMBv2 protocol
    for other
    purposes.

The problem can be reproduced in a normal Windows Vista client
    (without any
Citrix involved!) when the id file is stored on a Windows Server
    2008. It can
not be reproduced on Windows XP since SMBv2 is only used on the
    combination of
newer Windows clients (Windows Vista and 7) in combination with
    2008 servers.
If you use SMBv2 protocol in combination with the storage of the
    ID file and ID
vault, the ID vault is not able to write the ID file to the file
    share.

Maybe this is not supported environment, but we have spent a lot
    of hours to
determine what the problem really is. Now that we are sure of
    having identified
the problem we would very much like to share this information
    with development
to make Notes a better product.

Maybe we could save some other customers of IBM the frustration
    troubleshooting
    this issue.

Local fix

  • Workaround 1
On the client you can disable SMBv2 by using the following
    method:

    sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi
    sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled

    Restart the computer

    Workaround 2
In the notes.ini on redirect the ID file to a local disk or to a
    network share
    not using smb2

    KeyFileName=c:\users\xxx\user.id
