Error description
When you update the list of users of a work basket and their roles (for example, by pressing the Save button in Business Space), an asynchronous update mechanism is triggered in IBM Business Process Manager (BPM). Processing the update takes time because it is done in slices, depending on the number of tasks in the work basket, the number of users assigned to the work basket, and the number of roles the users are associated with. Processing happens in a logical transaction; for the duration of this transaction, the affected work items are blocked and cannot be modified by concurrent transactions, such as by process or task navigation transactions. If such a concurrent modification is attempted, you might see the following a runtime exception: WorkItem update in progress The occurrence of the exception causes the transactions to roll back, which might eventually lead to a jammed, less responsive system.

Problem summary
Frequent role updates on work baskets can take time and might have to be processed asynchronously (in several slices or database transactions). The time required and amount of slices depend on the number of tasks in the work basket and the number of users and roles assigned to users on the work basket. With large work baskets, subsequent work basket role updates can be triggered before updates have been processes. As a consequence, you receive a ?work item update in progress? exception.
Problem conclusion
A fix is available for IBM BPM V8.0.1.2 that improves how work basket role updates are processed. On Fix Central (http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral), search for JR52278: 1. Select IBM Business Process Manager with your edition from the product selector, the installed version to the fix pack level, and your platform, and then click Continue. 2. Select APAR or SPR, enter JR52278, and click Continue. When you download fix packages, ensure that you also download the readme file for each fix. Review each readme file for additional installation instructions and information about the fix.
