JR37104: SPARSE LOOKUPS FAIL WITH DB2 CC WHEN UNBOUND VARCHARS ARE USED IN THE MAIN STREAM

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• DB2 CC Sparse lookups failed when unbound varchar are used in
  the main stream but not in the DB2 CC stage.
  
  The following error is returned:
  
  DB2 CC Sparse lookup error '[IIS-CONN-DAAPI-000011] Failed to
  convert string (CC_StringConverter::toUnicode, file
  CC_StringConverter.cpp, line 321)'
  

Local fix

• Ensure that all varchar columns have a column size defined
  

Problem summary

  USERS AFFECTED:
  DB2 Connector jobs that perform sparse lookups and have unbound
  string columns in the Lookup stage (but those columns are not in
  the source table)
  ****************************************************************
  PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
  If the DB2 Connector is used for a sparse lookup and the input
  link to the Lookup stage includes unbound string columns, but
  those columns are not present in the source table (the table the
  DB2 Connector is SELECTing from) then the DB2 Connector will
  fail with an error message that reads:
  
       [IIS-CONN-DAAPI-000011] Failed to convert string
  (CC_StringConverter::
       toUnicode, file CC_StringConverter.cpp, line 321)
  
  (An unbound string column is a VarChar or NVarChar column whose
  length is not specified.)  (Columns that are present on a link
  but do not occur in the table are called 'unmatched' columns.)

  RECOMMENDATION:
  Apply patch JR37104

Problem conclusion

• The DB2 Connector was failing because it was trying to allocate
  buffers for unbound columns when those columns were not present
  in the source table (and thus an actual length for the columns
  could not be determined).  The DB2 Connector now ignores
  unmatched columns when performing lookups.
