Error description

  • If an agent attempts to register a subnode that is exceeds the
32 character platform limit, unpredictable behavior can occur
including TEMS crashes. When this occurs, the following message
will be recorded in the RAS1 log:

"The agent generated subnode name <name> exceeds the platform
limit of 32 characters. Registration is being blocked to avoid
    unpredictable behavior including crashes."

Some of the other messages written to the RAS1 log are:

      4BA141D2.0000-21:kpxreqhb.cpp,789,"HeartbeatInserter") Remote
      node
      <xxxxxxxx:T3> is ON-LINE.

    Detailed Recreation Procedure:

Connect T3 agent without fix in 7.1-FP0003 (shipped Feb 10,
      2010)

Wait for invalid subnode entry to register.

Local fix

  • The action required is to check and see if an agent APAR exists
that corrects thie problem. If so, install it. If not, then open
    a PMR against the agent.

Problem summary

  • If an agent attempts to register a subnode whose name exceeds
the 32 character MSN length, unpredictable behavior can occur,
    including management server crashes.

Problem conclusion

  • The change added works if the environment variable
KPX_CTIRA_BLOCK_INVALID_SUBNODE is set to Y on the management
server, then the registration of subnodes with MSN longer than
32 characters will be blocked. This is not set by default, but
can be turned on as needed.

    Install Actions

To enable this function, the variable
"KPX_CTIRA_BLOCK_INVALID_SUBNODE=Y" should be set in the file:
       $CANDLEHOME/config/kbbenv.ini
       or
       %CANDLE_HOME%\CMS\KMSCMS.ini

Change the existing line or add
KPX_CTIRA_BLOCK_INVALID_SUBNODE=Y at the end of the file. After
this change is made, the management server should be
reconfigured and restarted to enable that value.

The fix for this APAR is included in the following maintenance
    vehicle:
        | fix pack | 6.2.1-TIV-ITM-FP0003

Temporary fix

  • Ensure the subnode name is less than 32 characters long.
