Error description

  • Environment:
    All Windows platforms where the NT agent is being installed
    silently
      and multiple protocols are used for connection to the remote
    TEMS.
      This is a Windows ONLY APAR.

    Problem Description:
      NT Agent is installed via a silent install and multiple
    protocol
      values are specified in the silent.txt file used for
    installation. The
      NT agent is configured, but may not start. Reconfig of the
    agent using
      the GUI without changing any parameters causes the agent to
    start and
      report to the host TEMS.

    Detailed Recreation Procedure:
      To recreate:
      1. Install NT Agent silently using the following values in the
         silent.txt file.
         [ACTION TYPE]
         [INSTALLATION SECTION]
         License Agreement=I agree to use the software only in
    accordance
    with the installed license.
         Install Directory=C:\IBM\ITM
         Install Folder=IBM Tivoli Monitoring
         EncryptionKey=IBMTivoliMonitoringEncryptionKey
         SSLEnable=Y
         [FEATURES]
         KNTWICMA=Monitoring Agent for Windows OS
         [CMA_CONFIG]
         Protocol1=ip.spipe
         Protocol2=ip.pipe
         IPPIPE_Port=1918
         IPPIPE_Host=TEMS_HOSTNAME|IPADDRESS
         IPSPIPE_Port=3660
         IPSPIPE_Host=TEMS_HOSTNAME|IPADDRESS
         FTO Flag=N
      2. The agent will install and will configure, but will or may
    not
         start. Looking at registry information for
         HKLM\Software\Candle\KNT\ver610\Primary\Environment
         value KDC_FAMILIES shows no configuration data, no ports or
         protocols All the agent defaults are set properly, but the
    specific
         KNT agent is not configured properly to start.
      3. Reconfig in the GUI using the default values supplied, will
         configure the agent properly and allow it to start and
    report to
         the requested TEMS.

    Additional Information:
    ------------------------

    Customer mentioned that specifying 2 protocols but in upper case
    in the silent response file works well:
    Protocol1=IP.SPIPE
    Protocol2=IP.PIPE

    However, if either one protocol or 2 protocols are specified
    in lower case, the installation fails:
    Protocol1=ip.spipe
    or:
    Protocol1=ip.spipe
    Protocol2=ip.pipe

    Related Files and Output:
      Nothing additional has to be done, Install Log does not
    indicate there
      was an error, or that components were not configured. The NT
    agent
      just doesn't report into TEMS.

Local fix

  • Workaround:
      1. Use the GUI to reconfigure the agent.
      2. Use Remote Deploy createnode to deploy the NT agent with 1
         protocol.
         tacmd createnode -h target_host -u target_admin_id -w
    password
            -p PROTOCOL=IP.PIPE|IP.SPIPE

Problem summary

  • Silent install for Agents will not accept protocol values that
    are NOT uppercase. If lowercase is specified, when the Agent is
    configured in the background the protocol is not recognized so
    the Agent does not start or will not stay up. If the protocol
    values are entered in uppercase the Agent will configure and
    start. This also applies to Agents deployed and configured by
    Remote Deploy.

Problem conclusion

  • The silent install or Remote Deploy of Agents fails because the
    Agent does not configure or start when the silent install or
    Remote Deploy completes. Protocol checks were case sensitive in
    the code so only UPPERCASE worked. If lowercase or mixed case
    was used the protocol was not recognized so the config failed,
    or only one protocol (default) was used to the host machine so
    the agent would not connect. This is only a problem on Windows.

    The code was changed to support case insensitive compare so both
    lowercase and UPPERCASE work.

    The fix for this APAR is contained in the following maintenance
    packages:

       | interim fix | 6.2.0.2-TIV-ITM-IF0001

Temporary fix

  • Specify the protocol values in UPPERCASE for Remote Deploy or in
    the silent install config file for Windows.
