APAR status

  • Closed as documentation error.

Error description

  • A password is always required to access the service console.
    Blank passwords, even if correct, will not gain access to the
    service console.  Even if
    a username is allowed to login to the operating system without a
    password, access to the service console will be denied.  This is
    a security function.
    

Local fix

  • Work around is to create a password for the username that is
    being used to login to the service console.

  • The ITM v6.2 Problem Determination Guide has been updated as
    follows:
    
    Chapter 2. Diagnositc tools
    Section "Using the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Service Console"
    
    Updated to contain the following paragraphs:
    
    The IBM Tivoli Monitoring Service Console performs user
    authentication using the native OS security facility. If you use
    the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Service Console on z/OS systems, your
    user ID and password are checked by the z/OS security facility
    (RACF/SAF). If you use the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Service Console
    on Windows systems, then you must pass the Windows workstation
    user ID and password prompt. This is the rule except for
    instances of a NULL or blank password. The IBM Tivoli Monitoring
    Service Console never accepts a NULL or BLANK password.

    system without a password, access to the service console is
    denied.  Create a password for the user ID that is being used to
    login to the service console.
