Error description

  • As of Spectrum Scale 4.2.1 on Linux, GPFS no longer
    creates
the /dev/<fs_name> device for a filesystem. Applications
that relied on the file system device under /dev to be
present, or that relied on "/dev" to be displayed in the
output of the mount command, must find other ways to
    obtain
the information. As a substitute, consider the
    information
provided by the /etc/fstab file and /proc/mounts entries.

As a side effect; the current work directory($PWD) where
running the command mmmount or mount, if there is a file
or directory has the same name with the GPFS file system
name($FSNAME), then the mounted file system name in
    /proc/mounts or /etc/mtab would become ${PWD}/$FSNAME.

Spectrum scale cannot entirely control mounted file
    system
name in this situation, as this is controlled by the
    Linux
    /bin/mount command code.

This APAR is to address the explicit mmmount command via
current working directory to ensure that no prefix added
in /etc/mtab and /proc/mounts. However, the OS mount
    command
and automount cases will still be subject to this Linux
    mount
    command design.

Local fix

  • Ensure your $PWD does not have any file/directory with
the same name as the file system when running a mount.

Problem summary

  • GPFS removes /dev/ prefix in the device name in fstab.
Now, the system mount command looks at the CWD for any
same name. If exists, the full path of the CWD appends
to the device name in /etc/mtab and /proc/mounts entries.

Problem conclusion

  • Before invoke the OS mount command on Linux, cd to an
    empty dir.

Change back to the previous dir after mount.

This will not solve file systems that don't mount via
mmmount command. This includes automount file systems.
