IV82870: LONG FILENAME BE TRUNCATED WHILE UNARCHIVING OLDER TAR ARCHIVE APPLIES TO AIX 7100-03

APAR status

Error description

  • Restoring a tar archive that is not in Ustar format (made
    by older tar versions) might truncate files or
    directories
    names greater than 100 characters
    

Local fix

  • use pax command instead of tar command
    # pax -x ustar -rvf tar_archive name
    

Problem summary

  • If customer tries to unarchive a older tar archive
    ( i.e. doesn't contain the the magic string
    "ustar" in AIX or "ustar " in GNU)
    
    Filnames that are greater than 99 char in that archive gets
    truncated.
    

Problem conclusion

  • Making necessary code changes to fix the problem.
