Error description
Error Message: In Java 7.1 and Java 8.0 on Power platforms (AIX, Linux). Possible bad array translate of 16bit to 8bit characters when non-standard Latin characters are present (i.e. ト) . Stack Trace: N/A . The problem is only present on Java 7.1 and Java 8.0 and only on Power platforms (AIX, LinuxPPC, LinuxPPC little-endian).
Local fix
The problem can be avoided by disabling one optimization in the JIT compiler. -Xjit:disableIdiomRecognition This option might have a noticeable effect on performance but a typical system would see only 1-2% performance loss. A more pronounced effect is possible in rare cases.

The JIT could fail to translate 16bit Latin characters just prior to non-standard Latin characters when converting to 8bit characters.
Problem conclusion
The JIT was modified to correct this issue. . This APAR will be fixed in the following Java Releases: 7 R1 SR3 FP20 (7.1.3.20) 8 SR2 (8.0.2.0) .
