Error description

  • ***************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED:
    * Systems running VIOS 2.2.3.x with
    * pool.basic.rte below the 6.1.9.45 level.
    ***************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
    * This problem can occur in a VIOS SSP environment, when the
    * shared storage pool is close to reaching full capacity.
    *
    * In this situation, the pool can overwrite different parts
    * of the filesystem metadata, causing unpredictable problems
    * ranging from a few files in the pool (a few VIO client
    * LPARs) being unusable to the entire pool being rendered
    * useless. Usually this is first seen when all the VIOSes in
    * the cluster crash, which most likely results in all the
    * client LPARs crashing as well.
    *
    * All users of VIOS SSP must ensure they do not let the pool
    * approach reaching full capacity. When the pool exceeds
    * the tunable capacity threshold, a VIO_ALERT_EVENT
    * error will be logged in the error log and sent to the HMC.
    ***************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:
    * Update to VIOS 2.2.3.50
    * Or, an interim fix is available from:
    * ftp://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/iv70381/
    * https://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/iv70381/
    * Installation of the ifix requires a reboot.
    ***************************************************************

Local fix

Problem summary

  • Shared storage pool fragmented block corruption.

Problem conclusion

  • If IO request is misaligned on a fragment of fragmented block
    then we were setting the IO size to be whole fragment size but
    we should only set it to be equal to fragment size minus delta
    offset in the fragment.

Temporary fix
