Error description

  • PROBLEM: pconsole java process grows and consumes CPU

    BACKGROUND: The problem seems to be triggered by port
    vulnerability scanning. Precise requests have not been
    identified, but in each case we have seen related
    pconsole ports left in CLOSE_WAIT with vulnerability
    scanners as the foreign hosts.

    DETAILS: The pconsole java process consumes increasing
    amount of CPU.

    This can be verified by using tprof as follows:

    1.  Collect trof output

    # LDR_CNTRL=MAXDATA=0xb0000000@DSA tprof -P all -skjue -R
    -E -f 1 -x sleep 60

    Process PID TID Total Kernel User
    Shared  Other
    =======               ===      ===  ===== ======   ====
    ======  =====
    java              5767168  41353249  59.26   0.24   0.00
     0.12  58.89

    2. Verify pconsole is the java process:

    # ps -ef | grep 5767168

    pconsole  5767168 21299250  0 15:40:51 -  0:27
    /usr/java6/bin/java -Xmx512m -Xms20m -Xscmx10m
    -Xshareclasses <.....>launcher.jar com.ibm.lwi.LaunchLWI

Local fix

  • 1. If you do not use IBM Systems Director Console, you
    can uninstall the fileset

         # installp -gu sysmgt.pconsole.rte

    2. If the console is required for your environment, you
    can stop, then restart the console to
    remove the process.

    i) Stop the IBM Systems Director Console for AIX server

         # stopsrc -s pconsole
         # lssrc -s pconsole (to verify it has stopped)

    ii) Restart the IBM Systems Director Console for AIX
    server

         # startsrc -s pconsole
         # lssrc -s pconsole (To verify the console has
    restarted)
